Surviving the Summer: No Time To Be Bored

Two years ago we had a fun enrichment meeting at church. One of the classes provided me a life line for summer survival.  It was on what to do with the kids over the summer. I admit I thought we'd get a list of cool places and activities to do with the kids, but what I got was much better than that. An important lesson on teaching my kids to work! Our kids are expected to help and do daily jobs already, but no where did I hadn't thought about putting it in list form until this class.

Julie Mills taught the class. Her mom was a school teacher, and they had 6 kids. For 2 weeks of the summer the kids got to do what they wanted, but the moment one of them uttered the words "I'm bored!", the lists would start. Julie said if they went pretty quickly they could get everything done in 5 hours, but most days it took them longer. I'm aiming at 3 hours. Her mom had them practice the violin and the piano an hour each! Devan and Liz should count their 30 minutes as a blessing! :-)

We have a Saturday job list that includes taking out the trash upstairs and downstairs, mopping, sweeping, cleaning mirrors, cleaning toilets, cleaning rest of bathroom, etc... We pull out the list each Saturday and divide the jobs per family member. We all divide and conquer.

Her mom gave each kid $ .40 for every day they got everything done. Our kids get so many cents per year of their age. Then I have a list of $1 jobs they can do for extra money. $1 for cleaning out the van. $1 for vacuuming out the van. $1 for vacuuming all the bedrooms (an hour job). With my IF YOU HAVE TIME TO FIGHT, YOU HAVE TIME TO CLEAN PLAN, they get to do a job that mom picks which is usually is a job that they could have gotten paid for.

Here are items that Julie's mom had on the list:
Fold Laundry (I added wash to that. My two oldest do their own laundry.  I plan on teaching my 8 year old how to do his own this summer as well.)
Clean Room
Empty Dishwasher
Sweep Floor/ Vacuum
Dust
Clean Bathrooms
Make Bed
Do a craft
Do flashcards
Article of Faith practice
Piano Practice
Violin Practice
Brush Teeth
Get Dressed
Bike 1 mile
100 trampoline jumps
Shoot 15 baskets
Read a chapter
Make a birthday card
Read Scriptures
Homework Sheet (Her mom was a teacher and had boxes of worksheets.)
Crochet/Quilt
Play a game
Write name 5 times
Jump rope for 10 minutes
Play catch with sibling
Pick 10 weeds
Paint a picture
Play computer games
Yard or Garden Work

I made the lists individualized per child and age.  This is the 3rd summer that we've done the list, so this year the kids made their own list with my assistance.
To make it fair, I started a list for me as well of what I do in a day. My list is bigger than theirs, so if they complain I can point to the list and ask them if they'd like one of my jobs added to their list. :-)

I usually don't have to nag them to do their list.  I just ask to see where they were on their list and would praise them for how much they had gotten done. There is no swimming, video games, playing with friends, or movies until the list is done.

Julie gave us each the above paper to track the lists. The jobs are listed in the left column with the days of the week on the top. You can click on the image and print it to fit the page. Only 68 days left of summer!

Surviving the Summer: My IF YOU HAVE TIME TO FIGHT YOU HAVE TIME TO CLEAN Plan

http://heartofwisdom.com/images/blog/220kidsclean.gif

The thing I dread the most in the summer is the fighting between my children that occurs as we are sequestered inside our Arizona home hiding out from the heat.  Maybe your children are perfect and never argue or fight, but my kids have a problem with this during the summer.  Last summer I developed a new personal family motto:  IF YOU HAVE TIME TO FIGHT, YOU HAVE TIME TO CLEAN.  I call it inspiration in the midst of desperation.  My If You Have Time To Fight Clean plan worked so well for me last summer that I have decided to share it in hopes that it helps another mother who is fed up with fighting.
I've been asking the kids who is going to fight first because the van REALLY needs cleaned out.  My house was really clean last summer until the kids decided it really wasn't worth fighting.
So, here is the list which hangs both upstairs and downstairs for easy access.  The kids know the plan and that mom and dad are the ones who get to pick the consequence for both offenders whenever they fight.  You can change the list to meet your families needs.

If You Have Time To Fight, You Have Time To Clean List

1. Clean out the van. Throw away all the trash in doors. Bring in any loose papers on the floor to mom. Any loose items or toys also need to come inside the house.

2. Vacuum the van- floors and seats. One of you does the driver and passenger side and the middle row. The other vacuums the back row and back storage area.

3. Pick all the toys in the house. Flip a coin to see who cleans upstairs and who does downstairs.

4. Scrub time. Each of you gets to wash the floor of one bathroom or the laundry room (mom's choice) on your hands and knees with a bucket of soap water and a rag.

5. Grab your gardening gloves. Each of you gets to pull 15 weeds from the front or back yard. Use hand shovel to dig out if necessary.

6. Dust all the blinds in the house or dust the furniture (mom's choice). One will do upstairs and the other will do downstairs.

7. Each of you will take turns vacuuming two rooms of mom's choice.

8. Broom work. One of you will sweep the kitchen, dining, living room, and walk ways downstairs. The other will sweep all the bathrooms and laundry room.

For arguing offenses of lesser manor:
1. Each of you read 3 books of Emma's choice to Emma.
2. Time out in your rooms with only a book for 20 minutes.
3. Extra 15 minutes of practicing an instrument or piano.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3139/2359249898_7cac157913.jpg?v=0
From May 25th- September 3rd, 2012, you can purchase an all park pass at Food City or Bashas' for Golf N' Stuff for only $13.75 ($35 Value). Summer Fun Discount Includes: Miniature Golf, 4 Ride Attractions, and 4 Arcade Tokens. Discount tickets are only available at Bashas' and Food City. You pay for the pass at the store, and they give you a printed ticket that you exchange at Golf N' Stuff for a wristband. You must do all the activities in the same day. Plan at minimum 2-3 hours to do everything on the wristband. You also need one ticket per person. You can't share the wrist band. My kids LOVED this place. I was amazed how much of the park was shaded and how the water in the park kept the temperature down on the miniature golf course. My family is anxious to go back! Golf N Stuff is located at: 6503 E. Tanque Verde Road 520-296-2366
    3. THREE FUN Summer Reading Programs
Pima County Library's Summer Reading Program starts May 24th and runs through July 21st. The kids can earn prizes and discounts for reading.
The library has great FREE activities for kids during the summer. Check their calendar online by selecting kids and your local branch to see everything going on this summer. My kids are excited to see Ronald McDonald in person at the library again this summer. They love the pizza making event and the ventriloquist and puppets that come to the library in the summer.
    http://www.tucsonzombies.com/Sponsors_files/Bookmans%20Earth%20Logo1%20-%20High%20Res.jpg
Bookman's also offers a Reading Program for kids. For every 10 books your child reads, they'll give you one free. What's the catch? You just have to write a short report telling them:
    * Your name and age
    * The title and author of the book
    * Why you liked or disliked the book
You can even include drawings. When you've finished your 10 book reports, bring them to your favorite Bookmans and they'll reward you with a free book for all that hard work.
Bookman's has FREE Kids Events starting May 29th and running weekly through July. I've taken my kids to these in the past. I suggest getting there early so your kids can see and fully participate in the activities. Click here to see the calendar of summer events for kids.
Barnes & Noble Summer Reading - Imagination's Destination - Kids earn a FREE BOOK when they read any 8 books.

Barnes and Noble's Reading Program Imagination's Destination starts May 22nd and ends September 4th. If kids read 8 books this summer and record them in their Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Journal, they can go to Barnes and Noble and choose one of 18 FREE books from the book list on the back of the Journal. Barnes and Noble also offers FREE storytimes twice a week throughout the summer as well. In June, one of their story times will include Decorate a foam tie for dad for Father's Day.

Click here to see what's available for kids this summer at Barnes and Noble.

    4. Kids Bowl Free program
    http://bowldetroit.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/kidsbowlfree.jpg
Kids 18 and under can bowl 2 FREE games every day all summer long. What's the catch? You can not just show up and bowl for free. You must enroll your kids online at kidsbowlfree.com. When you register, you chose one of the 5 Vantage Bowling Centers participating in Tucson. Don't forget that you'll also need bowling shoes. You can rent shoes for $3 each time you go or you can bring your own bowling shoes. Even if you rent your shoes, $3 for 2 games of bowling is a bargain! How the program works: 1. All of the participating bowling centers are listed at http://www.kidsbowlfree.com/all_centers.php. 2. Select a bowling center near you. 3. Register directly on the bowling center page (The registration is valid only at the bowling center where you register and cannot be used at any other bowling center unless otherwise noted.) Once you register, you will have the opportunity to purchase the family pass. The Family Pass was created to allow for adult family members to enjoy bowling throughout the summer as well. The Family Pass starts from $24 .95 and includes 2 GAMES PER PERSON PER DAY. The Family Pass covers up to 4 adult family members. You may have 1, 2, 3, or 4 adults on the family pass. How long does the program run? Free bowling begins May 1st and the program ends August 31st. Every Sunday you will receive an email with the coupons for the free games for that coming week.
What if parents want to bowl are their any special deals for them? The family pass is an unbelievable deal for just $24.95 per family. Again the family pass is good for up to 4 adult family members (Mom, Dad, Older Siblings, Grandma, Grandpa or an Adult Babysitter) to bowl 2 games of bowling every day all summer long along with the children that have registered in your family.
Family Passes are a limited time offer... Each participating bowling center has a limited amount of family passes available and when they are gone, they are gone. We don't want you to miss out. The family pass is such a great deal that using your family pass just one time all summer may save you $$$ right away...but the family pass can be used every day all summer and has a value in excess of $1500.
